PDH/DSn Applications

The MTX150 provides PDH testing functions with rates ranging from 140 Mbps (E4), 34 Mbps (E3), 8 Mbps (E2), 2 Mbps, to N/M×64 kbps, as well as 45 Mbps (DS3), 1.5 Mbps (DS1), to N/M×56 kbps. Other testing functions include simultaneous display of multiple G.821, G.826, M.2100 results, pulse template analysis, and loop delay testing. Testing rates also include mapping and demapping of E1, E3, and E4 payloads for virtual containers, as well as overhead testing for TU-11, TU-12, TU-3, STS-1, and AU-4. This functionality is ideal for testing hybrid PDH/SDH and DSN/SONET networks.

PDH/DSn Performance

Auto Configuration

When the received signal is unknown, the auto-configuration function simplifies instrument setup, allowing beginners to perform tests quickly.

Multi-BERT Function

The Multi-BERT function automatically generates different test patterns in a sequential BER test, enabling quick provisioning and maintenance of DS1 link services. Certain test patterns help identify and test specific issues or conditions. Custom test sequences with specific test patterns and timing items can be defined for particular test environments, such as checking line coding, frame type, clock recovery settings, etc.

Pulse Template Analysis

Frequent failures in PDH signal pulse templates are often caused by interface issues, long cables, impedance mismatches, or poor transmitters. In such cases, G.703 pulse template testing is highly practical for troubleshooting related problems.

Intuitive Test Results

The summary screen quickly reports signal status, typical errors, and alarm parameters with an easy-to-read pass/fail display.

Powerful Histogram Testing

Simultaneous display of test results with 1-second resolution facilitates alarm and error correction.

DS1 Loopback Commands

Advanced DS1 loopback commands enable single-ended testing of DS1 links by activating automatic loopbacks at specified network elements.

ISDN Testing Functions

The ISDN option provides numerous useful features for testing and troubleshooting DS1 or E1 PRI lines, such as SIP trunk services. In TE/NT or test mode, the instrument can set up and receive ISDN calls with user-defined parameters (call control protocol, called number, and related parameters).

Protocol features include detailed signaling statistics, message testing and decoding, and comprehensive results. These functions allow for flexible analysis of international and domestic ISDN protocols and other access protocols.

VF Testing

The Voice Frequency (VF) testing option is a fundamental diagnostic tool for installing, validating voice lines, and troubleshooting. It tests digital-to-analog conversion by inserting/testing user-defined frequency and level tones on selected subchannels.

A microphone/headphone jack enables talk-and-listen testing, with robust VF decoding capabilities for PDH/DSn and SDH/SONET interface rates.

Jitter and Wander Testing

Data integrity in synchronous networks largely depends on the phase stability of clocks and data signals. According to ITU-T G.810, long-term jitter is considered present when unwanted phase modulation frequencies exceed 10 Hz. When frequencies are below 10 Hz, this unwanted modulation becomes wander. In SDH/SONET networks, jitter accumulation significantly degrades network performance, making it necessary to test components and networks as a whole to identify regular jitter and ensure overall network quality.

Jitter Testing Standards

Jitter performance is measured by testing the recovered clock of received signals (E1, E3, STM-1o, and DS1, DS3, OC-3) in accordance with ITU-T 0.171/0.172 and Telcordia GR-499/253 standards.

The recommended test duration is 1 minute, though not explicitly defined in standards. Jitter is measured in unit intervals (UI), with large peak-to-peak jitter being a critical parameter as it directly impacts network performance and causes errors. Jitter is defined as phase variations above 10 Hz, and received signals must be filtered for testing. Users can choose between wideband and high-frequency filters as required.

Wander Testing Standards

Wander testing requires an external reference clock, whereas jitter is typically tested using the clock extracted from the received data signal. The external reference clock input for wander testing accepts clock signals at 1.5 MHz and 2 MHz, including 64 kbps, 1.544 Mbps, and 2.048 Mbps signals.

When measuring input signals (E1, E3, STM-1o, DS1, DS3, OC-3), the external clock signal serves as the reference, and the time interval error (TIE) is displayed in time units (ns) rather than unit intervals.

MTIE (Maximum Time Interval Error) results display the largest peak-to-peak TIE value observed during the test.

SDH/SONET Testing Applications

The installation, commissioning, testing, and maintenance of SDH/SONET and PDH/DSn networks benefit from an intuitive and powerful testing interface. SDH signals often suffer from various impairments during multiplexing, making it crucial to define anomalies or defect types and isolate issues caused by network elements or signal paths. Rapid troubleshooting and comprehensive analysis of transmission problems can be performed using intrusive, non-intrusive, and test modes. Novice users can easily use auto-configuration and tributary scanning test modes, while experienced users can leverage advanced features such as overhead testing and byte control, pointer test sequences, path trace generation, and concatenation testing.

Out-of-Service Testing

Applications include:

BERT testing, tributary mapping and demapping, path/section trace generation, service acceptance (M.2100), pulse template analysis (E1/E3/DS1/DS3), multiplexing testing, loop delay, pointer test sequences, jitter generation, MTJ, JTF

In-Service Testing

Applications include:

Optical power and frequency testing, tributary scanning, performance analysis compliant with G.826, G.828, G.829, M.2101, pointer analysis and generation, APS testing,

Concatenation detection, overhead byte control and decoding, jitter and wander testing

Ethernet Applications

Carrier Ethernet Applications

Reliability, scalability, and quality of service are essential metrics for Ethernet to meet Carrier Ethernet standards. With standardized RFC2544, Y.1564 service activation testing methods, and support for Ethernet OAM, MPLS, and VLAN, the MTX150 provides the necessary testing functions to ensure end-to-end Carrier Ethernet service validation.

Mobile Backhaul Applications

With the rollout of 3G and 4G LTE networks and growing demand for high-bandwidth services, mobile Ethernet backhaul deployments are accelerating. For operators transitioning from highly reliable traditional TDM networks to packet-based services, evaluating network performance is a critical step. The MTX150 tests all key performance indicators such as bandwidth, latency, and jitter, enabling quick and easy measurement and assessment of services to be deployed.

Triple Play Applications

The MTX150 provides an excellent testing solution for validating triple-play services. With additional support for IPTV, VoIP, WiFi, and data testing functions, it solidifies its importance in converged networks.

RFC2544 Standard Testing

The automated RFC2544 test suite supports all recommended frame lengths, as well as user-defined frame lengths and rate configurations. RFC2544 testing can be performed via remote loopback or P2P peer mode (symmetric or asymmetric). Configurable thresholds ensure accurate SLA testing and validation. Automated testing supports throughput, latency, frame loss, and back-to-back testing.

Advanced SLA Mode

This testing function combines powerful multi-stream throughput testing with the RFC2544 industrial standard for SLA validation. Service providers can verify SLA service levels while assessing QoS. By configuring a basic test stream and up to 7
